  4. Ritzma — Ritzema Dairy Ltd — 42372 Centennial Rd, Seaforth

    • Gerhard and his father came to Canada in 1993 and started by milking 30 cows in an old tie stall barn. By 1999, they were milking 70 cows and built a new freestall facility with capacity of 137 head. In 03/04 a transition barn and another 100 plus stalls were added.
    • In 2005, Gerhard got married to Heather who now takes care of most of the financials on the farm.
    • In 2007 the partnership between Gerhard and his father dissolved. By 2009 a new 350 freestall barn was built and the old barn was renovated to house heifers.
    • Currently they are milking approximately 300 cows. The herd is an Alta advantage herd, using 100% Alta bulls.
    • Since the quota cap, the Ritzema's see it as an opportunity to improve the herd through better genetics. In 2011, a couple high genomic animals were purchased to flush.

Future plans are to milk more cows that are profitable with higher genetic value!
